The Wrangler was initially released during a time in the automotive industry when most manufacturers were experimenting with releasing new models, some of which would fade into obscurity, while others would continue to be developed into the industry that we all know today. Drivers first got their hands on the Wrangler starting in 1987, about a decade and a half before the Rubicon became a reality. The Evolution

The Wrangler Rubicon was first introduced into the Wrangler's lineup in 2003 and has remained a fixture of the lineup ever since. When it comes to performance, there are several ways the Rubicon manages to differentiate itself from its standard counterparts. You'll usually find a Wrangler Rubicon with larger wheels for better ground clearance, front and rear locking differentials to improve off-road traction, and the aforementioned enhanced suspension. The Rubicon also includes some unique styling elements that make it stand out from other Wrangler models, including its trademark red tow hooks. Every element of the Rubicon is both bold and functional.

When the redesigned JK-generation Wrangler hit the market in 2007, several other additions came over to the Rubicon as well. Features such as four doors instead of the two that were the standard up until this point would become an available option within the Wrangler's lineup. Engine updates would also translate over to the popular Rubicon models. A prime example of this is with the 2012 Wrangler, which upgraded its powertrain to a smaller, yet more powerful 3.6L V6 that produced 285 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. This would remain the sole powertrain of the Wrangler, including the Rubicon, until Jeep would make another leap in performance with the 2018 JL-generation Wrangler.

This new generation of the Wrangler changed things up drastically, and this time drivers could choose between a duo of available powertrains rather than just one. These new powertrains included a turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder that produced 268 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, while the same 3.6L V6 engine made a return. This power, combined with the Rubicon's generous supply of off-roading features, cemented the Wrangler Rubicon's reputation as one of the very best off-roading vehicles around. With a low crawl ratio and front and rear locking differentials, you can guarantee you'll have continuous traction on the trail and won't find yourself getting stuck on tough rocks and hills.

Continuous Legacy

For the next few years, the Wrangler Rubicon continued to be one of the most popular Jeep trims of all time. The automotive industry is always innovating, and manufacturers compete with one another to earn the trust of the consumer. However, with the Wrangler Rubicon continuously harnessing the very best that an off-roading vehicle has to offer, enthusiasts already know who they can trust, and that's Jeep. Today, the Wrangler continues to improve, with new features, new technology, and new powertrains.

The 2020 Wrangler was the first time that a trio of available powertrains was made available, with a turbodiesel V6 being added to the mix. The Rubicon received another significant boost in performance in 2021 with a highly performant V8 HEMI 392 that produced an incredible 470 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. This increase in performance helped the newly launched Rubicon 392 become the most capable Rubicon up until that point. With enhancements to the Rubicon's suspension along with 2-inch shocks and a refined braking system, the Rubicon 392 earned its place as the best Rubicon to date. Additionally, the Rubicon has received various tech-oriented features that allowed the driver to monitor their vehicle's performance while on the trail, and additional cameras to keep watch on obstacles in front of you.
