Many drivers can remember when Ram and Dodge were seemingly inextricably linked. The ram head logo first appeared on Dodge trucks as early as the 1930s as a hood ornament. The idea was that the ram itself represented a certain rugged appeal, with the ability to climb high and work hard, even in less-than-ideal conditions.
Over time, the Ram logo faded into the background as Dodge pursued other images and marketing ideas. In 1981, famed president and CEO of Chrysler, Lee Iacocca, encouraged a return of the mascot in an attempt to compete with rival truck manufacturers at Ford and General Motors. This effort led to the first generation of Dodge Ram trucks, which became quite the success.
The first generation of Ram had two drive options: D, for two-wheel drive, and W for all-wheel drive. Half-ton trucks were given the 150 designations, while the 250 indicated a three-quarter-ton truck, and 350 full-ton trucks topped the food chain. This numbering system changed in the late 1990s when a second zero was added to each. Today, Ram trucks are still referred to as 1500, 2500, or 3500, based on their load capacity.
The famed Cummins diesel engines found their way into the Ram playbooks in 1989. Cummins was producing high-powered diesel engines for the commercial vehicle segment at the time and had recently created a medium-duty truck engine known as “the B-series.” Dodge took the bait, and it was a huge hit. By 1996, Cummins-powered Rams were exceeding the 200 horsepower marker. Just five years later, 500 lb-ft of torque was no problem. In 2019, that number doubled, with the Cummins-powered Ram 2500 and 3500 providing drivers with 400 horsepower and 1000 lb-ft of torque. As a result, today’s Ram drivers have access to best-in-class towing, with the ability to haul upwards of 37,000 pounds.
The 1994 Dodge Ram is one of the most celebrated trucks from the Dodge Ram era. Its exterior was inspired by the 1950s Studebaker Transtar and big rig haulers. While this might sound like an awkward pairing on paper, the effect was successful. This generation of Ram looked big and tough on the outside because it was actually a big and tough truck. The interior was enormous by the standards of the time, with full-sized doors that made it easier for drivers to climb in and dismount these big work beasts.
Before becoming an industry standard, the Dodge Ram did it. The rear-hinged double cab door found on the Quad Cab models was also a product of the 1990s. Driver side airbags were another segment-first, along with four-wheel antilock brakes. In fact, the Ram was one of the first trucks in the segment to provide comfort and convenience features inside the cabin, in addition to creating a rough-and-tough work partner. Little touches, like reclining seats, paved the way for some of the more luxurious features we see in today’s versions. Without Ram’s addition of features previously relegated to passenger cars, drivers of pickup trucks today might not have access to heated leather bucket seats, automatic climate control, or premium sound systems.
Ram lost the “Dodge” branding in 2010. Pickup truck drivers tend to be loyal to the trucks that treat them well, so many people were confused by this perceived split. In truth, nothing about the Ram changed when they lost the “Dodge” name. The trucks continued to be powerful work companions, and Dodge now had the opportunity to focus on powerful muscle cars and SUVs. The brands continue to coexist under the Stellantis umbrella of manufacturers, including Chrysler, Jeep, Fiat, Maserati, and Alfa Romeo.
