The History and Legacy of the Ram Pickup

Although the modern Ram truck has been available for more than 40 years, its roots go back much further than that, and they are directly tied to the Dodge automotive company. The Dodge Brothers Company got its start in 1900, originally as a supplier of parts and assemblies for other companies before building its own automobiles. By 1920, Dodge Brothers provided delivery trucks and similar service vehicles for businesses and even the US Army, with numerous models available throughout the early part of the 20th century. Throughout the 1940s, they offered a T Series, V Series, and W Series of trucks; these were followed by a Dodge B series truck from 1948 through 1953, then a Dodge C series following that through 1960, and a D series from late 1960 until 1993.

The Dodge Ram was introduced in October of 1980, and if you are wondering how there is an overlap between this and the end of the D series, it’s because the Ram was essentially the D series with a facelift and updates. Dodge decided to rebrand their popular truck and introduced the Ram name in 1980, but through 1993, it utilized much of its previous design. For the 1994 model year, the Dodge Ram finally came into its own with a full redesign that established it as a force to be reckoned with in the auto industry. For this reason, some people consider 1981 to be the start of the Ram since that is when the name started being used, while others look to 1994 for when it truly became its own model.

This redesigned 1994 Dodge Ram proved immediately popular and was named "Truck of the Year" by Motor Trend and other industry insiders. More updates and new generations came to be in the years that followed: a third generation launched for the 2022 model year, with a fourth generation that kicked off with the 2010 model year. This is particularly significant because it was the last time this legendary truck would be called the Dodge Ram.

For the 2011 model year, Dodge and Ram separated from each other, with the Dodge brand focusing on performance cars and small SUVs while Ram became its own brand with a focus on powerful, sophisticated trucks. Since then, Ram pickups have continued to make a name for themselves as some of the most luxurious and technologically innovative trucks on the road, while their legendary HEMI engines deliver power you cannot find anywhere else.
