An Overview of the Ram Legacy

There has famously been some confusion about Ram and its place in the automotive industry. Many ask us if Dodge owns Ram or if Ram and Dodge are the same manufacturers. It’s easy to understand why this mix-up occurs because, at one point, Ram was actually a model name for a truck under the Dodge brand. The Dodge name also underwent a few ownership changes in the early years due to some bankruptcy and bureaucracy matters. Chrysler now owns it under the Stellantis umbrella.

In 1981, a model called the Dodge Ram existed, which was a light-duty pickup under the Dodge name. But in 2010, the Chrysler group decided to turn Ram into its own brand, disentangling it from the Dodge name. At that point, Dodge became more about minivans and cars, and Ram was focused on attracting serious truck drivers needing tough vehicles. So, Dodge became something of a family-focused brand, and Ram became more of a contractor/DIYer/off-roader’s brand; however, Chrysler still owns both.

Essentially, a Ram vehicle made before 2009 would be a Dodge Ram and one made after 2009 would simply be a RAM. Today, Ram makes light-duty and heavy-duty pickup trucks and vans. In the US, Ram vehicles are made at the Warren Truck Assembly in Warren, Michigan, where Dodge vehicles have been manufactured since 1938.

The Modern Ram Truck Lineup

Currently, Ram makes light-duty, heavy-duty and chassis-cab trucks, offering an excellent variety for truck drivers of various kinds. The light-duty 1500 has several engine options and different bed sizes, making it a popular choice for its versatility. Its light-duty towing abilities make it ideal for small campers, boats, or moderately-sized equipment. It’s a terrific choice for a DIYer or contractor with modest towing and hauling needs.

Drivers who need a heavy-duty truck can check out the Ram 2500 or 3500. These traditionally get larger and more powerful engines than the Ram 1500 and are made for serious hauling and towing around a work site, farm, or similar environment. Diesel and V8 engines are common among these models, and like the 1500, you have several bed size options. The 3500 is also available in a chassis (no-bed) model for great business customizability.

If you are looking for more of a commercial class pickup, check out the Ram 4500 Chassis Cab. With a no-bed design and serious towing abilities, it’s great for a variety of industries that need the freedom to customize the rear of their truck to hold specific equipment or vessels. Ram even goes up to a 5500 Chassis Cab, a serious heavy-duty commercial truck with an impressive gross vehicle weight rating and powerful engines to back it up.
