So let’s dive into the details of the door jamb dilemma.

A red 2020 used Ram 1500 is shown parked in the mountains.

Details in the Door Jamb

If you get a chance to look at the inner frame of your drivers’ door and you’ll likely notice a sticker better known as the door jamb sticker. You might even find a few stickers depending on the year, make, and model. Regardless, the information on the door jamb stickers is critical in helping you understand some highly relevant data points about the Ram 1500’s tires, towing, trailering, and performance information.

VIN Details – You’ll likely see the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and complementary details. The VIN is the unique number that only this specific Ram 1500 has, and it can be used to look up important details such as title and ownership information. You’ll also find some related numbers or names on this sticker, such as the paint type and the trim type. The paint type is important so you can do an exact match for any touch-ups or repairs to the Ram 1500’s exterior finish. The trim level is also displayed to show you the version of your Ram 1500 and the features that were on it at the time of manufacture, so you know what was original.

Weight Details – An important number you’ll find on a door jamb decal is going to be numbers that describe the Ram 1500’s gross vehicle weight rating, likely listed as the GVWR on the sticker. This weight factors in a full tank of gas, the maximum number of passengers, and the maximum amount of cargo. Exceeding the maximum GVWR can result in mechanical failures that could put everyone in the truck and on the road at risk, so pay attention to this data point.

Tire Details – The door jamb stickers will also tip you to important facts about the tires you should use when operating your Ram 1500. You’ll see information about the size and dimensions of the tires and the proper PSI level that each tire should be inflated to so your truck will drive safe and smooth.

Trailering Details – In addition to the GVWR described above, which is an overall figure for the vehicle, there are additional numbers worthy of your attention when using the Ram 1500 for serious towing and trailering. One is the Gross Axle Weighing Rating (GAWR). GAWR represents the maximum weight an individual axle can support.

Other items that may be apparent in the door jamb would be the payload, which is how much additional cargo weight you can add beyond what the truck weighs on its own. This is a simple yet useful number to approximate what you can safely carry as payload. The Towing Capacity is another number that will be super useful and is specific to trailering. This is the maximum pounds the truck can safely tow behind it. It is a factor of the aforementioned GVWR and GAWR numbers.

Finally, there is the Gross Combined Weight Rating or GCWR. This is the largest number you’ll likely see on the door jamb or in Ram 1500 specs. This is the maximum weight when the truck is at its maximum payload and maximum towing capacities. So, don’t exceed GCWR; that’s pretty important.

The official Ram 1500 specs will tell you a lot of the basics. For example, a 2021 Ram 1500 Tradesman has a GVWR of 7,100 pounds, a payload capacity of 2,320 pounds, a towing capacity of 7,740 pounds, and a GCWR of 12,900 pounds. However, those are maximum specs for the model, and your particular used truck will have different numbers depending on how it was options. So look in the door jamb instead of just reading the official manufacturer specs.

A blue 2020 Ram 1500 is shown from the front parked in a city after looking at a used Ram 1500 dealer.

Does the Door Seal the Deal?

While the door jamb has a wealth of information, Ram also recognizes that the average truck buyer may not have the time or expertise to decipher all of this information. Given information about tire pressure and towing weight are pretty important to vehicle and people safety, Ram created a cool website where you can simply type in the VIN and find the specific payload and towing ratings for that specific Ram 1500.

Just go to the Ram Towing Capacity Guide, and there will be a pop-up box to enter the specific VIN when clicking “look up my vehicle.” This site also has tons of general information about towing and trailering with a Ram, including towing technologies you can use and the engine performance when towing. If you plan to do some serious hauling, such as a boat, RV, or camper, be sure to check out this useful site.

Be Confident, Ask Our Experts

As you can tell, there is an overload of information on the door jamb and elsewhere. That is why you should lean on our friendly and knowledgeable team at Dan Cummins for your used Ram 1500.

Depending on your needs, we’ll likely tell you that your tires should be between 35 and 80 PSI depending on the tow weight, terrain and weather. We’ll also let you know that your Ram 1500 should tow about 10% under the maximum GCWR because we want you to be conservative and safe when on the road with your family and friends. Our staff will educate you on what it means to have an E10 tire which is the likely tire you’ll need for the distance and cargo you’ll tow.

So check out the door jamb in a used Ram 1500, but then stop by and see us. We’ll figure it all out together – that’s who we are and what we do.

Luckily, we’re here to help guide you through your purchase – from beginning to end. You may have a multitude of brands, shapes, and styles to choose from when standing in a vast lot of cars, but with a few of our pointers, you’ll be able to find the perfect car, truck, or SUV.

Although you may have already made a few decisions about your next purchase, your shopping journey has only just begun. Who would’ve thought there would be so many decisions to make and options to choose from? In today’s market, there is also a variety of certified pre-owned cars available to you. Whether you prefer a specific manufacturer, a particular year, or only know the style of car you want, we can assist you on your journey to weed through the best pre-owned car options we offer based on the criteria you are looking for.

You Have the Power to Choose Your Brand!

When it comes to our pre-owned inventory, we carry models from nearly all of the major manufacturers. We get it – maybe you’re a Chevy person or even a Ford fanatic. Well, you’re in luck because your options are far from limited. Whatever your preference, there’s a make for you. From Infinity to Hyundai, Dodge to Toyota, Chrysler to Volkswagen – the choice is all yours! Whether it’s a choice of preference or budget (and maybe a little of both), our used car lot carries a variety for every style. Even if you have no clue which brand to choose, there are additional ways to find the perfect car to meet the criteria you are looking for.

A close up shows the rear end of cars on a Lexington used car lot.

What’s Your Style?

Purchasing something brand new may seem like the best way to go when you’re in the market for a car. But sometimes new isn’t the best option for everyone. Whether new isn’t in the budget – or even if you prefer something that has been on the market for a while so that you will know whether or not there are any quirks to the model you’re interested in – pre-owned can be a great option for car buyers.

If you’ve never browsed through a used car inventory before, you may imagine just unwanted, beat-up jalopies. But that’s not actually what a pre-owned vehicle is. When you’re in the market for a used vehicle, you shouldn’t have to give up style – and with our selection, you don’t have to! Purchasing a car is a necessity for most, but a car can also be bought as an accessory. With the amount of miles we put on our vehicles and the amount of time we spend in our cars, they are truly our most valuable accessories. Just because you’re browsing through a used car lot doesn’t mean you can’t find something to fit your style.

Luxury

So you want to look glamorous, fabulous, or just luxurious driving around Lexington, how about an Infiniti G37 X AWD? When you drive around in the 2012 four-door midsize sedan model, you’ll not only look sleek and stylish, but you will feel just as luxurious with the spacious interior and smooth ride – no matter what type of weather your trip brings you. Holding up to 5 passengers and offering 13.5 cubic feet of trunk space, you’ll have plenty of cargo room for a long business trip or just a ride around town with the family. This V6 all-wheel-drive beauty can give you a combined rating of 20 mpg along with its 328 hp.

Or, can you picture yourself cruising around in a pre-owned Chrysler 300? This four-door 2015 sedan, with the V6 engine and rear-wheel-drive, screams style and elegance while driving through the Kentucky countryside. Giving you 30 mpg on the highway and 292 hp, your ride through town will feel as royal as you will look driving in it – beauty, fuel economy, and a little power – not too bad for an affordable used sedan.

Performance

Do you enjoy feeling like you’re living on the wild side? Do you want speed and adventure right at your fingertips? If so, then you’ll enjoy these next cars.

If Dodge is your preference, you are in luck! You can purchase a pre-owned Dodge Challenger R/T! You can even find used 2018 models and newer available (some people just can’t handle the power)! The V8 HEMI rear-wheel drive, two-door coupe can put out up to 375 hp. Even if you don’t want to take advantage of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, you can still look adventurous cruising around.

And for our Chevrolet enthusiasts – the Camaro SS is perfect for satisfying your need for speed! The 2018 V8 rear-wheel drive, 2-door coupe can go from 0 to 60 mph in 4 seconds flat! Not to mention it can put out 455 hp and gets a combined 20 mpg. That’s not bad fuel economy for a V8 muscle car.

Economy

Speaking of fuel economy… if eco-friendly is your style, no problem! Some of the best used cars for the Lexington area have amazing fuel economy. The Chevrolet Cruze is a compact car that gets great gas mileage! This 2011 front-wheel drive 4-door sedan can get a combined 32 mpg. There may not be a whole lot of “get-up-and-go” with this car only accelerating from 0 to 60mph in 9.6 seconds, but if you’re looking for more “bang-for-your-buck” with gas mileage, then you don’t really want a car that’s quick off the line.

If a Chevy is not really your brand, how about a Toyota? The 2008 4-door Toyota Yaris is a front-wheel drive subcompact hatchback that’s slightly smaller than the Chevy Cruze and gets a combined 32 mpg! Or maybe a Ford is what you are looking for. The 2018 Ford Fusion is another four-door sedan with amazing gas mileage. This front-wheel-drive, midsize car can give you a combined 27 mpg along with its spacious interior for your cargo needs or passenger transportation. There are even hybrid versions that are even more efficient!

Concluding Your Pre-Owned Purchasing Venture

In an already stressful adventure – whether you’re on this journey to find your very first car or to replace a previous vehicle – we hope to keep your anxiety levels to a minimum. Standing in a field of pre-owned cars at your Lexington used car lot can certainly be overwhelming. You’ll be surrounded by cars of all makes, shapes, models, ages, and colors, but as long as you have criteria to base your search on, sifting through all of the pre-owned gems can even be enjoyable.

So pick up that pen and paper – or start typing on your smartphone – and jot down what you want in a car. Whether you want a canary yellow car or one that can go from 0-60 mph in 4 seconds flat to satisfy that need for speed that you typically keep caged inside, we can work with any criteria. You CAN find a used car that you’ll WANT to drive off our lot.

If you are on the hunt for “new cars in stock near me,” then you might be seeing some 2022 options starting to pop up in your research. Well, we are here to help you see what exciting new options are going to be making their way onto our lot soon. Below, we take a look at some intriguing new offerings as well as a couple of under-the-radar favorites from last year and give you a primer on some of the 2022 Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram models we are excited about. There are some old favorites back for another spin around the block, yet another improvement on an already record-setting truck, and a minivan out to prove that the class still deserves its spot in the market.

2022 Wagoneer

There’s been a trend with resurrecting popular models from the past as of late, and this is one we’re excited to see back on the sales floor. The Jeep Wagoneer was first introduced in 1963 and essentially introduced the world to the concept of the SUV by throwing a station wagon-like body onto the frame of a 4×4 Jeep. The model saw a luxury upgrade in the early ’80s with the Jeep Grand Wagoneer, an even more luxurious version. Now, the Wagoneer is here to stand on its own in the market, with the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer dropping the Jeep name and pushing forward as a new standard in luxury performance.

Aimed at the large family SUV sector, the Wagoneer is the challenge to other three-row highway behemoths such as the Chevy Suburban and Nissan Armada. With a V-8 engine and up to 10,000 pounds of towing capacity, it certainly has the brawn to put up a good fight and has a few tricks up its sleeve to boot. Every Wagoneer is equipped with not only a 5.7-liter V-8 with 392 hp but has a 48-volt hybrid system as well. This hybrid powertrain is especially helpful given the sheer amount of fuel needed to move this 6,000-pound SUV down the road and ups the ante with a cylinder deactivation system that conserves gas even further. Optional four-wheel drive and a 3.6-inch adjustable air suspension give the Wagoneer the tools for some off-road fun, along with a driver-mode selector system that provides a range of preset tweaks for tackling sand, mud, snow, and rock.

Though the Grand Wagoneer ups the ante even further, the luxury credentials are still on full display with the Wagoneer. The three-row SUV can be configured to seat up to eight passengers, and leather upholstery, ambient interior lights, three-zone automatic climate control, and 12-way power-adjustable seats are all offered standard. The Wagoneer is available in six trim levels, giving drivers ample opportunity to customize the SUV to their liking. The upper-end trims boast an impressive suite of in-car technology, especially when it comes to display screens. On the Series II trim and above, the front passenger gets their own infotainment display, as well as an unprecedented dual-screen rear entertainment system. Add a head-up display, a self-parking system, and 360-degree exterior cameras, and you’ve got a cutting-edge tech package that shows the brand has done its research on the competition.

2022 Ram 1500

The truck that redefined the class is back at it again. As one of the first-size pickups to truly embrace some of the higher-end features found on luxury SUVs, the Ram 1500 is out to prove that power and comfort aren’t mutually exclusive. Notable tech features include an available head-up display, digital rearview mirror, and a bevy of creature features for the off-road set, like an app within the truck’s infotainment system which allows drivers to monitor ride height, pitch-and-roll, and a number of other relevant metrics.

Unlike many trucks in its class, luxury and infotainment features are not an afterthought on the Ram 1500. The class-leading pickup includes the now-ubiquitous Apple CarPlay and Android Auto but adds a mobile hotspot and two impressively sized displays to the mix as well. At 8.4- and a staggering 12-inches, the Ram 1500’s touchscreen is easier to navigate than many competing systems. These infotainment displays also include a feature that’s quickly emerged as an important deciding factor for many shoppers: real dials and buttons. While the futuristic allure of a smooth, seamless display is understandable, many drivers have expressed a desire for the inclusion of more traditional controls as well. Ever-responsive to the changing tastes of today’s market, Ram is ahead of the curve on this one, offering drivers the option between the cutting-edge and the tried-and-true methods of control.

The Ram 1500 is offered in myriad trim levels, with nine trim options to choose from. Drivers can choose between a V-6 or V-8 setup, and all engines – save the 5.7-liter Hemi – get a boost from a 48-volt hybrid system. The Ram 1500 has always been offered in a wide range of trim levels, and 2022 is no different. This year’s options include an off-road-ready BackCountry Edition, luxury-packed 10th Anniversary Edition of the beloved Limited model, and a new G/T package available for the Laramie and Rebel trims. The G/T package is particularly interesting, featuring paddle shifters, cold-air intake, and a passive cold-end exhaust system, which increases efficiency while offering superior insulation and sound-dampening properties. Horsepower ranges between models, but in general, the Ram 1500 is not hurting for power with a towing capacity of 12,750. Combine that with a 5’7” or 6’4” bed, and you’ve got a truck that’s more than capable of hauling around the mountain of “best in class” awards it’s accrued over the years.

A black 2021 Chrysler Pacifica is shown driving through the snow after searching for new cars in stock near you.

The 2021 Model is shown above.

2022 Chrysler Pacifica

The crossover SUV is an undeniable force in today’s vehicle market, but with its sleek styling and ample cargo and passenger room, the Chrysler Pacifica is out to prove that a minivan can still hold its own in a rapidly changing industry. Recently recognized with Car and Driver’s Editor’s Choice Award for minivans, the Pacific performs its role so well that it’s managed to stave off the inevitable crossover-ization that’s befallen many of its contemporaries. Still, some changes to meet current tastes are necessary, and the 2021 model saw a modern makeover to its exterior which, combined with available all-wheel drive, might have you wondering what the difference between a minivan and a crossover is in the first place. Since this model saw an update for 2021, we don’t expect to see much change in the upcoming 2022 model, so we are going to show you what to expect based on the 2021 model.

Offered as both a 3.6-liter V-6 and plug-in hybrid, the 2021 Pacifica has a little zip for what most drivers traditionally think of as a solid family vehicle, boasting a zero-to-60 time of 7.3 seconds. The 2022 Pacifica offers the option for all-wheel drive, but the real icing on the powertrain cake comes down to efficiency. Despite its size and impressive cargo capacity, the Pacifica still gets an estimated 22 MPG combined in its V-6 setup and an impressive 84 MPGe in the hybrid configuration.

Obviously, cargo space is the watchword in the minivan market, and the Pacifica has that covered. With roughly 140 cubic feet of cargo volume, there are storage spaces galore, and Chrysler’s Stow ‘n Go seats can be packed away flush in the floor on the V-6 model (the Hybrid’s battery makes floor storage too tricky). In one test, reviewers were able to store 53 suitcases in the minivan, which should satisfy even the longest-term vacationers out there. Since a minivan is nothing if not a way to shuttle children around, the Pacifica comes with an optional built-in vacuum cleaner for tidying up after the inevitable maelstrom. The 2021 Pacifica justifies its relatively high starting price of around $36,000 with a bevy of standard features, including a 10.1-inch touchscreen, power liftgate, and adaptive cruise control. With all this in the 2021 model, we will be happy to see it again in 2022.

There are many occasions that can make you feel like an adult and that you’re truly on your own; however, very few occasions match the feeling you get when you purchase your first car. You’re not only setting off on your journey behind the wheel, but you’re also making your first investment and accepting a major responsibility. The prospect alone can be daunting, especially if you’re not familiar with the car-buying process or know the right questions to ask. That’s why, as your premier Kentucky used car lot, we’ve put together a beginner’s guide to car buying to help you successfully navigate the process of purchasing your first car.

Back to Basics: English 101

The car industry is inundated with acronyms and words like VIN, APR, and fair market value that might sound foreign to you at first. But just like you learned the basics of the English language, you can quickly learn what these terms mean and how they apply. Here’s a quick overview of the most common words and phrases you’ll hear as you shop for a used car.

Annual Percentage Rate (APR)

The Annual Percentage Rate, which is also known as the finance rate, is the annual interest rate that a lender charges you to borrow money for your car loan. You’ll hear “APR” when you apply for financing. Our finance department will work to secure the best or lowest rate available based on your credit score.

Certified Pre-Owned (CPO)

There’s a big difference between a used and CPO vehicle. A CPO vehicle is usually priced slightly higher than a used vehicle and is backed by the manufacturer. Every CPO vehicle must meet a set of requirements and undergo a comprehensive inspection and any necessary repairs before it’s given the CPO badge.

A salesman is passing a set of keys at a Kentucky used car lot.

Default

When you finance your first car, you’re responsible for making the monthly payments on time and in full. Defaulting on your loan occurs when you fail to make those payments, which can cause the bank or lender to take back the vehicle. Defaulting also affects your credit rating and can make it difficult for you to secure loans in the future.

Depreciation

Depreciation is the decrease in a vehicle’s value over time. While every car depreciates, new cars depreciate much faster over the first five years of ownership. This makes buying a used car a better option since you’ll get a better value car at a more affordable price.

Down Payment

The down payment is the money you put down on the vehicle at the time of purchase. This payment reduces the amount of money you’re borrowing from a lender and, in turn, can lower your monthly payments. Typical down payments are approximately 20 percent of the vehicle’s sale price. For example, if you’re purchasing a $15,000 car, the down payment would be $3,000.

Extended Warranty

When you shop for a used car, you’ll want to learn all you can about warranties and extended warranties. New cars come with a manufacturer’s warranty which expires after a set time or mileage. The extended warranty can add coverage after the factory warranty expires, which gives you greater peace of mind in your purchase since warranties cover expensive components like engines, transmissions, air conditioners, etc.

Lease

The dealership may ask if you’re interested in leasing a vehicle. Leasing is an agreement between you and the dealer that allows you to use the car for a set period of time and within certain mileage parameters. Once the lease is up, you return the vehicle to the dealership with several options––buy the leased vehicle, sign a new lease, or buy another vehicle. While leasing is a great way to get behind the wheel of newer models every few years, it’s only a good option if you know you can take good care of the vehicle since there are penalties for excessive wear and tear.

MSRP

An acronym for the “Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price,” the MSRP is the price you’ll find on the vehicle’s Monroney or Window Sticker. The MSRP reflects the price of the vehicle as it sits on the lot but does not give you the total cost of the vehicle. For example, a vehicle’s MSRP is $25,000, but this does not include finance charges or taxes.

A close up shows the rear ends of a line of cars.

VIN

The 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number identifies the vehicle by its make, year, body style, and engine. Located under the windshield or on the door jamb, the VIN is a great way to learn more about the vehicle itself. You can use the VIN to look up the vehicle’s value as well as any associated recalls.

Questions to Ask

One of the best things to remember when buying a car for the first time is that you are in control of the process. You can look at as many cars as you want, take as many test drives as needed, and ask every question imaginable. A reputable dealership will be there every step of the way until you have all the information and confidence you need to make your purchase. But what questions should you ask?

Can I take the vehicle for a test drive? A test drive can tell you a lot about how a vehicle performs. Once you’re behind the wheel, you can test the vehicle’s ability to quickly accelerate or stop and how it responds. You can also take a closer look at its interior and features like the infotainment system, air conditioner, etc., to ensure they function properly.

  • Is the vehicle history report available? Often provided by CARFAX, this report gives you a clearer picture of the vehicle’s history and includes its repair history, number of owners, title issues, and accident involvement.
  • Is the vehicle under warranty or eligible for an extended warranty? Since repairs can be costly, you’ll want to know more about the vehicle’s current warranty as well as available coverage.
  • Has the vehicle been inspected? If you’re shopping for a CPO vehicle, you know the answer is already “yes.” However, if you’re shopping for a used car, don’t be afraid to ask this question or ask the seller if you can have your mechanic inspect the vehicle for any potential issues.

First-Time Buyer Tips

As you start your search for a used car, it’s important to understand a few key phrases that will help you navigate the process and find a vehicle that truly meets your driving needs. It’s also important to start your search on the right foot, and that means knowing your budget. For first-time buyers, setting a budget can be difficult, but it’s not impossible; it’s the best way to set yourself up for success. Just like you budget for groceries, utilities, and hobbies, budgeting for a vehicle tells you how much you can afford to pay for a vehicle. Just be sure to factor insurance and maintenance costs into your budget.

Once you know your budget, it’s easy to start your search for the perfect vehicle. You’ll discover that your budget may not go as far on a new model, but it can get you behind the wheel of a fully-loaded model when you shop from the used lot. This is a great incentive to purchase a used vehicle and is what attracts many first-time car buyers to our lot.

When you find a vehicle that you love, be sure to take it for a test drive (or two). Don’t be afraid to get the car’s VIN and do some research of your own to ensure it’s priced fairly. We even recommend reaching out to your insurance agency to see how much your monthly coverage will be on the vehicle. This can give you a better idea of whether or not the vehicle is within your budget.

From there, the process is easy as the dealership works with you to get the paperwork completed. You’ll have the opportunity to apply for financing, make your down payment, or buy the vehicle outright, as well as add any additional warranty coverage. Once the papers are signed, the vehicle is yours, and you can drive home happy and filled with pride from making your first car purchase!

When it comes to the RAM 1500 MPG, the 2021 RAM 1500 fuel economy is able to reach 20 mpg city/25 mpg highway with a 3.6L V6 Pentastar engine, eTorque capability, and rear-wheel drive. This means it has one of the strongest fuel efficiencies throughout the model line, as well as having the best-in-class 4×4 fuel economy. This means that you’re able to select the configuration and engine that fits your needs, including the best-in-class 4×4 driving range of 624 miles on a full tank.

What is the eTorque System?

It’s not just the engine that is allowing the RAM 1500 to achieve unrivaled mpg ratings, but also the eTorque system. Instead of an alternator, models equipped with eTorque use a 48-volt belt-driven motor that’s powered by a battery. While a mild hybrid system might seem more suited to hybrid and electric cars, it results in more torque, payload, and towing capability.

RAM 1500 Efficiency Systems

Many unique systems contribute to the exceptional fuel economy of the RAM 1500:

  • Transmission – A standard TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission adjusts shift points for maximum efficiency and performance.
  • Design – For 2021, the all-new RAM 1500 features an elevated hood and redesigned roof to lower its drag coefficient.
  • Active Air Dam – Standard in the RAM 1500 Rebel and non-air suspension models, this class-exclusive air dam lowers once the truck reaches 30 miles per hour.

View Pre-Owned Vehicles
The best part about shopping for a used car nowadays is the plethora of technology found inside cars that are even a few years old. It used to be that the only way you were able to take advantage of the most cutting-edge tech in a vehicle was to buy brand new, but that’s not the case with the used inventory on offer now. At Dan Cummins Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, your top used car dealer in Lexington, we have some tips for you when you’re looking to buy a used car. Not only are you able to enjoy a much more reasonable price when buying used, but you’re also able to get some of the latest tech in the industry, maybe even some features that you wouldn’t be able to afford if buying new. When you’re shopping for a vehicle, take a look at some of the most advanced tech features that you’ll want to find in a used car.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Integration

These days, we’re all about our phones, and being able to take advantage of their features on the go is essential. Whether you’re a lifelong Android fan or a total Apple fanatic, there’s a connectivity option available for you in many used cars, even in those that are older than you might think. When searching for a used car, it helps to find one that offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities to help you stay effortlessly connected during your day. Whether you’re looking to check your messages, stream your favorite music or get directions to your destination, it’s all possible with these integrated systems. Being able to control your favorite go-to apps straight from your infotainment touchscreen makes it easy to stay updated even during long trips.

If you want to remain connected during your ride, look for models that are from 2014 to the present, as Apple CarPlay made its debut in 2014, with Android Auto following a year later. Not only are you able to stay in control of everything happening on your device, these features reduce distractions on the road, helping drivers stay safer on any journey.

Advanced Safety Features

Speaking of staying safe on the road, cars these days are equipped with some of the most advanced safety and driver-assist systems on the planet. From Adaptive Cruise Control to help you stay a comfortable distance from the vehicles around you to Emergency Braking capabilities to help you avoid making contact with obstacles, these features can be found in nearly all modern vehicles available today. Gentle reminders to alert you if you’re drifting out of your lane, blind spot features to aid in better visibility, and even automatic headlights have made their way into vehicles for years. Just because you’re buying used, it doesn’t mean you have to skimp when it comes to safety.

From Ford CoPilot360 to Toyota Safety Sense, Nissan Safety Shield 360 to Honda Sensing, you’ll find loads of options when it comes to staying safe during your travels. Choose from more recent model years to take advantage of more standard features so that you’re able to travel with the confidence you need in any road conditions. When you have your vehicle watching out for you, you’re able to better focus on the journey that lies ahead.

A close up shows a smartphone charging wirelessly in a 2021 Ram 1500.

Bluetooth Capabilities

Bluetooth has been around for decades, which makes it easy to find a vehicle with this capability inside. When your vehicle offers Bluetooth compatibility, you’re not only able to enjoy your ride even more; you’re also able to ensure you’re staying safer with your eyes on the road instead of on your phone. Allowing for hands-free operation of your phone, you’re able to make phone calls via voice prompts, send text messages, and listen to music from your favorite apps, like Pandora, Spotify, and more.

Never miss a beat when you’re connected to Bluetooth, as you’re able to stay fully updated on your day. For those looking at slightly older vehicles, which may not include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, Bluetooth is the next best thing to stay intuitively connected no matter where you’re traveling to next.

Parking Assist Features and More

Modern vehicles offer up a lot of help in virtually any situation, especially when it comes to parking. Whether you’re trying to navigate your way into a tight parking space or you’re backing up in a crowded parking lot, parking assist and rear camera assist features can help you perform these tasks with ease. Utilizing cameras and sensors, your vehicle will alert you if you’re coming within close proximity to an object, helping you to avoid making contact with that obstacle and keeping everyone around you safe.

If you want to take advantage of the latest driver-assist features, it’s best to stick to newer models, even those just a couple of years old. You’ll still be able to enjoy a much lower sticker price, but with loads of helpful features designed to improve your confidence behind the wheel. Speaking of getting more confident during your travels, if you have a teen driver in your home, many models come with teen driver tech to help perfect their skills in the driver’s seat. From driving reports to helpful tips, your new driver will improve and become more confident in no time.

A close up shows the infotainment screen with navigation in a 2021 Ram 1500.

Hands-Free Driving Abilities

It may sound too futuristic to be true, but more and more vehicles are being equipped with hands-free, otherwise known as semi-autonomous, driving capabilities. Made possible by the use of Adaptive Cruise Control, paired with pre-mapped roads and various sensors, vehicles can now take over the hard task of driving while you stay focused on the road. With hundreds of thousands of compatible roadways across the country, semi-autonomous driving abilities can be found in Tesla, Cadillac, and Ford models and are expected to be found in more and more vehicles over the next few years, with talk of completely self-driving vehicles available in the near future.

Although you’ll have to stick with more recent models to be able to take advantage of these abilities, there are a lot of options making their way to used lots everywhere. And what better way to try out this new technology than by buying used and enjoying it for a much lower price? If you want to harness the power of some of the most advanced technology in the industry, you’re able to do so in a used vehicle, making buying used even more enticing than ever before.

Finding Your Next Used Car in Lexington

Gone are the days of having to settle for whatever resided on the used lot, even if it wasn’t anywhere near what you wanted in a vehicle. And forget about not being able to get all of the newest features available in a vehicle when buying used. The used car buying experience has gotten infinitely better throughout the last couple of years, with the emergence of better-equipped options hitting lots across the nation. Some of the most highly sought-after features are new technologies, which makes searching for a used car even more exciting since you’re now able to enjoy these features without overpaying for a new vehicle.

Interested in the new RAM 1500 for sale near %%target_city_1%%? Sometimes %%di_city%% drivers will need to know the weight of their new vehicle, which is something that %%di_name%% understands well— that’s why we’ve provided this guide. The 2021 RAM 1500 weight range can vary depending on a few factors. Without any cargo or passengers on board, the RAM 1500 curb weight ranges from 4,778 pounds to 6,396 pounds. The RAM 1500 Gross Vehicle Weight rating (GVWR) is between 6,010 pounds to 7,800 pounds. You can learn more about the difference between curb weight vs. GVWR, and see the RAM 1500 weight laid out by trim level, below.

Curb Weight vs. GVWR: What’s the Difference?

The 2021 RAM 1500 weight may be listed as 4,778 pounds to 6,396 pounds, but it’s important for %%target_city_2%% drivers to know that this range is considered the curb weight. That means it’s the weight of the RAM 1500 without any cargo or passengers loaded into it or towed behind it. If you want to know the RAM 1500 weight with all of these “extras” factored in, you’re actually wanting to know the RAM 1500 Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, or GVWR. The GVWR is the safest maximum weight the RAM 1500 can handle, including passengers, cargo, curb weight, and tongue weight when towing.

Note: Despite common misconceptions, the tongue weight does not equal the towing capacity of the RAM 1500. Rather, it’s the amount of trailer weight placed on the actual hitch.

How Much Does the RAM 1500 Weigh Per Trim Level?

The 2021 RAM 1500 is an incredibly versatile truck. It not only offers %%target_city_3%% drivers plenty of customization and power via its different trim levels, but these trim levels can influence the weight of the RAM 1500. The curb weight for each trim will vary:

  • 2021 RAM 1500 Tradesman:4,778 pounds – 5,106 pounds
  • 2021 RAM 1500 Tradesman HFE:4,768 pounds
  • 2021 RAM 1500 Big Horn:4,792 pounds – 5,137 pounds
  • 2021 RAM 1500 Laramie: 4,899 pounds – 5,248 pounds

  • 2021 RAM 1500 Limited Longhorn: 5,192 pounds – 5,387 pounds
  • 2021 RAM 1500 Limited: 5,345 pounds – 5,568 pounds
  • 2021 RAM 1500 TRX: 6,396 pounds

RAM 1500 GVWR by Trim Level

  • 2021 RAM 1500 Tradesman: 6,800 pounds – 7,100 pounds
  • 2021 RAM 1500 Tradesman HFE: 6,010 pounds
  • 2021 RAM 1500 Big Horn: 6,800 pounds – 6,900 pounds
  • 2021 RAM 1500 Laramie: 6,800 pounds – 6,900 pounds

  • 2021 RAM 1500 TRX: 7,800 pounds

A Quick Look at RAM 1500 Towing

A white 2019 used Ram 1500 is shown driving after leaving a used truck dealer near you.

You have some cash to spend on another vehicle. You decide you want a used pickup truck. Why not? They’re big, they’re beautiful, they’re perfect for work, and they’re fairly spacious to boot. You’ve settled on choosing between a used Chevy or a used Ram of the light-duty variety. What do you go with? You’re asking yourself, should I get a used Silverado 1500 or a Ram 1500? Well, the good part about it is that we can help you narrow down the choices. This way, when it’s time to visit a used truck dealer near you to buy your used Silverado 1500 or Ram 1500, you will show up knowing what you want.

Obviously, your first series of questions will be about performance, price, capabilities, and capacity. Right? Of course. But you should also know that different model years come with different standard features. You may even be shocked to know that the visual style of both trucks has changed over time as well. In essence, if you’re buying used, you need to be informed about which truck might best suit your style based on a number of factors.

I Want a Great Looking Truck. Is the Silverado or Ram Better for Me?

When it comes to looks, it all depends on what you’re gunning for out of a used truck. If you want a traditional-looking pickup with a boxed frame and simple lines, then a 2017 or 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500 is a perfect full-size fit. The 2018 model year was the final year of the third-generation Silverado, so it comes fully featured and with a lot of amenities that were introduced throughout that time frame. If you wanted a more modern-looking truck with relaxed lines and smoother curves, a 2019 (or newer) Silverado might be a better fit.

But what if you want a tough-looking pickup with a lot of muscle to its fascia and presence? Well, in that case, you definitely want to go with the Ram 1500. Fourth-generation Ram 1500 pickups feature the iconic cross-shaped grille design with the Ram badge in the center. It adds a very sturdy and rugged look to its hulking frame. That look is still retained with the fifth-generation Ram 1500 trucks; only the grille design has changed quite a bit. There’s a lot more chrome and flair to the fascia, too. Should you want something even sportier, the latest Ram 1500 has been sold in a variety of blacked-out appearance packages.

A blue 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 is shown driving on a highway in the desert.

I Need a Truck for Work. Which One Should I Get?

Both the Ram 1500 and Silverado 1500 are excellent for work purposes. If you want a used pickup with amazing payload capacity, try the 2019 Ram 1500. With a 3.6-liter V6, rear-wheel drive, and a Quad Cab, you can expect a max payload capacity of 2,320 pounds. The 2021 Ram 1500 Classic Express and Tradesman trims in the Quad Cab format with the 3.6-liter V6 will also net you 1,930 pounds worth of payload if you were considering getting a newer used pickup.

On the conventional towing and trailering side, both the Ram 1500 and Silverado 1500 offer amazing ratings. The two trucks nearly tie for many of the used variants currently available on the market. You can expect anywhere between 12,500 and 12,750 in terms of max conventional towing for both the Ram and Silverado from their previous generation model year offerings. The 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500, however, received quite the boost for its outing, allowing for a maximum trailering capacity of 13,400 pounds. So if you wanted great payload capacity, definitely consider the Ram 1500, but if you wanted top-end trailering capacity, you might consider a used 2020 Silverado 1500.

Is a Used Ram 1500 or Silverado 1500 Better for Performance?

Performance is a very important aspect of any light-duty pickup. You can’t go wrong with a used Ram 1500 or Silverado 1500. Both trucks have a history of being very performance-driven for multiple generations. The Ram has typically been known to attract enthusiasts for lots of high-end horsepower, but the Silverado is no slouch either. In fact, the Silverado edges out the Ram 1500 on average when it comes to max torque from its gasoline engines, with the Ram 1500 offering up to 410 pound-feet of torque, whereas the Silverado’s 6.2-liter V8 option extends up to 460 pound-feet of torque.

Alternatively, the Ram 1500 typically offers more average horsepower across its used trim lines. So if you were going with something from the third or fourth generation, expect better top-end horsepower from the Ram 1500, while the Silverado 1500 may offer more overall torque. There is the exception, of course, with something like the Ram 1500 TRX, which comes with more horsepower and torque than most people can handle. But it all boils down to how much power you need and how much power you can actually harness.

A white 2020 Ram 1500 Longhorn is shown parked outside of a metal barn.

Is a Used Ram 1500 or Silverado 1500 Better for Fuel Economy?

Model years from previous generations of the Ram 1500 will net you better fuel economy compared to those same model years of the Chevy Silverado 1500, depending on the powertrain you go with. However, newer model years of the Chevy Silverado 1500 with the turbo-diesel option will earn you better top-end fuel economy over the Ram 1500. By comparison, the Ram 1500’s diesel option will earn you about 22 miles per gallon in the city and up to 32 miles per gallon on the highway, while the Silverado 1500’s diesel option gives you 23 miles per gallon in the city and up to 33 miles per gallon on the highway.

Of course, the fuel economy is going to be completely dependent on what you plan to use the trucks for and how much traveling you plan to do in the truck. For the non-diesel option, a used Ram 1500 can deliver up to 20 miles per gallon in the city and 25 miles per gallon on the highway. Most used Silverado 1500 pickups hover around a maximum of 20 miles per gallon in the city and up to 23 miles per gallon on the highway.

Is a Used Ram 1500 or Silverado 1500 More Dependable?

The Ram 1500 and Silverado 1500 are both noted to be very dependable trucks when well maintained. A used Ram 1500 is known for holding up quite well under duress and long-term use, especially the newer models paired with an EcoDiesel engine. Many Silverado 1500 owners also report having put anywhere between tens of thousands of miles up to hundreds of thousands of miles on their truck.

In short, both the Ram 1500 and Silverado 1500 are known for being very reliable and very dependable pickup trucks. A lot of that dependability also factors in how frequently the trucks are maintained, as well as the trim you go with. If you like off-roading and go with a used Ram or Silverado designed for off-road use, then expect to put more time and effort into maintaining the trucks. If you go with a luxury trim that you don’t drive often, the truck is likely going to last quite a while without any major problems. But a lot of it will depend on trim, model year, and powertrain. All of those are features that a used truck dealer near you, like Dan Cummins, can help you out with during your truck-shopping experience.
